Hullo WCC volunteers, members and friends!

As you may already know, WCC will be celebrating our 25th anniversary with a fund raising dinner on Saturday Oct 2, at Gurney Hotel, Penang.

As part of the entertainment for the evening, WCC will be performing a dance. And you should know right now, given WCC's track record - it WON'T be just any ordinary dance!!!

The dance (movement to music, involving some drama) will depict

i)                   a women's journey - from victim to survivor

ii)                 a show of women's solidarity and

iii)               the support needed from both men and women for our quest to end all forms of violence & discrimination against women.

We are so excited about this and need about 30 people (anyone irrespective of gender, size, shape, colour or ability) who are willing to be a part of this creative piece of work.

We are LOOKING FOR PEOPLE who are able to fulfill the criteria below:

a)     can follow a rhythm and are able to move using basic/simple dance steps

b)     are free and committed to practices on Friday evenings and over the weekends (sat or sun) from July, Aug and Sept

c)     can work as a team and take instruction from choreographers.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Prema or Nadia at WCC 04-2280342. We are really looking forward to hearing from lots of you soon. We want to make it a really good 25 year celebration. And yeah! WCC Rocks!

The Hungry Ghost Festival is held during the Seventh Lunar Month and is largely celebrated in Penang. During this month-long festival, it is believed that the Gates of Hell are thrown open in which all spirits and ghosts from the nether world are allowed to roam the land once again in search for food to appease their hunger.

Throughout this period, ample of paper money and joss sticks are burnt as offerings by the Chinese community to their dead family members. This practise of making offerings to the dead on the streets is also believed to ward off bad luck. On a nightly basis,  staged operas and puppet shows are also conducted along the many streets of Penang for the gods and the ghosts to keep them entertained.

At the end of the festival, a paper formation of the King of Hungry Ghosts, "Tua Lau Eaa", is burnt in a big ceremony to send him back into hell with all the other ghosts.
